Abstract
Thghtly helical bacteria were observed from the stomacher of the beagle dogs which were served to histopathological examination after subacute toxicity test. The beagle dogs were purchased from Mashall Farm USA Inc. On the histopathological observation of fundic and antral area, mild to marked number of tightly helical bacteria were observed from all the 24 animals examined. The bacteria were tightly spirals that were 6¡10um long and 0.8¡1.0um wide and had seven to nine spirals per cell and no periplasmic fibrils. With hematoxyline and eosin staining, the bacteria were seen on the surface of the gastric epithelia or in the gastric pits. With Steiner¢¥s silver staining, the bacteria were seen gastric glands, fundic glands and parietal cells. The lesions were slight infiltration of lymphocytes in lamina proplia in 11 cases, increase of lymphoid follicles in 5 cases and slight migration of neutrophils in one case. In electron microscopic observation, the bacteria have flagella from one end of the cells, where the the electron density was low. The bacteria had similar morphological characteristic with Gastrospirillum sp. In this study, we confirmed that beagle dogs used as experimental animals were generally infected with Gastrospirillum sp. If the beagle dogs infected with Gastrospirillum sp. are used in the estimating the efficacy or safty test on the chemicals which change the physiological, biochemical or immunological environment of the stomach, the precise data shall not be gained. It is needed to investigate the relation between Gastrospirillum sp. infection and chemical treatments.
